I just asked my boss...
...which word was posh (or proper), 'napkins' or 'serviettes' and now he won't stop laughing at me!
Am I really that ignorant?
Which is it then?

(3.2.04 16:29) Daisy, Daisy, Daisy....(shakes head sadly)...and I thought you were one of us... |
(3.2.04 16:31) It's definitely napkins if you want to be posh. 'Serviettes' is distinctly non-U (cf Nancy Mitford.) I can see your boss's point though... |
Daisy (3.2.04 16:38) Well, I have now know from my boss (who said the same thing as Kate did actually) that one must always use an anglo saxon word rather than a french word given a choice... I'm afraid that I am more the bling-bling, diamond cars, footballers wives type... Never mind eh? |
(3.2.04 16:40) I thought napkin was the American word for serviette. Hmmm. |
Daisy (3.2.04 16:43) Ah, now we get into the highly comical nappy/ diaper debate.... |
(3.2.04 17:00) Diaper isn't even a real word, look at it, look at it standing there with it's strange ia thing going on! |
(3.2.04 17:40) It has to be Napkin |
(3.2.04 17:42) Sorry Daisy, but I couldn't resist - have a look here! - http://www.imagecounts.co.uk/etiquette.htm |
Daisy (3.2.04 18:10) Oohhh - fab... this should provide me with blogging gems for years once I realise how many horrible mistakes I have made in the wrong company. Cheers lovely!! |
(4.2.04 15:57) Daisy - remember also, never wipe your mouth on the table cloth |
(5.2.04 00:56) A napkin is made of cloth, whereas a serviette is disposable (like the ones you get in Burger King). On that basis, I'd say a napkin is more posh. |
